What can you do?
What can you do?
On this page you will find ideas and suggestions on what you or your organization can do to support the MDGs. The links will show you websites with relevant and more and comprehensive information.
Choose sustainably produced FSC wood and paper
Products carrying the FSC label are independently certified to assure consumers that they come from forests that are managed to meet the social, economic and ecological needs of present and future generations. More information: www.fsc.org
Buy Fair Trade products where possible
Fair trade is an organized social movement and market-based approach to empower developing country producers and promoting sustainability. The movement advocates the payment of a fair price as well as social and environmental standards in areas related to the production of a wide variety of goods. More: www.fairtrade.net
Choose green, social and ethical funds and insurances
It is good to realize that even if you lead a virtuous life and try to have a healthy personal relationship with nature and human rights, your money could be working against you if it is invested in polluting and destructive enterprises. So ask your financial advisor about green, social and ethical funds and insurance companies, or if you own stocks of a polluting or destructive corporation, consider letting them know – as a shareholder – that you would like them to get a better environmental policy (or you could just sell the stock and invest the money somewhere else). Money is a powerful tool. Use it for good. www.socialinvest.org
Save energy, reduce and compensate CO2 emissions
Climate change presents significant threats to the achievement of the MDGs, especially those related to eliminating poverty and hunger and promoting environmental sustainability. Climate change is here to stay. But it is still in our power to influence just how serious the problem will become. If you reduce your energy consumption and thus your climate impact also saves money. On a more macro-economic level, economic opportunities arise from measures taken to reduce energy. While some sectors might suffer increased costs, many will seize the opportunity to innovate and get a step ahead of their competitors in adapting to changed market conditions.
